“Going into a lunchtime meeting with Charlize Theron a few weeks ago, I wasn’t sure whether to feel amped or a little afraid,” writes our reporter @carabuckley8. @シャーリーズ・セロン is, of course, a powerhouse actress. She’s played a series of lethal ladies. And being an Oscar winner, she’s good at her job. But her portrayals of killers — in “Monster,” in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” in “Snow White and the Huntsman” and now in “Atomic Blonde” — all suggest a woman who doesn’t easily suffer fools. “I became very aware of women in certain circumstances not being allowed to play by the same rules guys get to play by,” @シャーリーズ・セロン said. “I was actively looking for a protagonist that could break those rules.” The 41-year-old, who was raised in South Africa, has resisted links between her history and characters. But the turmoil those characters endured, and the strength they acquired as a result of it, is, for her, personal. When she was 15, her father threatened his wife and daughter with a gun. He began shooting, and her mother shot back, killing him. “You’d be an idiot not to put it together that I like women who can struggle, and win the struggle, and get out of their situations,” @シャーリーズ・セロン said. “They’re not victims, but they’re also not superheroes.” @emilyberl photographed #CharlizeTheron last month in LA.
