Carla Provost is the first woman to lead the Border Patrol in its 93-year history. But her career almost ended not long after it began. In late 1997, her 2nd year as a @customsborder agent, Carla and her partner were almost run down by a drug smuggler in a pickup truck. Later, she was trapped in a ditch with other agents as drug smugglers hurled stones down on them. Carla, who was photographed here by @Lexey Swall, said that she has never considered leaving, despite the dangers, the remote locations where she’s been stationed and the fact that she’s one of a few women in a male-dominated agency. When she joined, @customsborder agents patrolled wide-open borders with just their weapons and a few vehicles. Today’s #BorderPatrol uses drones, high-tech sensors, surveillance cameras, military-style body armor and high-powered rifles. What hasn’t changed: the ratio of women to men. Carla hopes that her promotion will help recruit more women to the agency. “We work in a diverse environment,” she said, “and women bring a different perspective to the table.” At the same time, she wants female agents and recruits to feel that they’re an important part of the organization. “We aren’t women Border Patrol agents,” she said. “ We are Border Patrol agents.”
