The British journalist Martin Walker, photographed here by Rebecca Marshall, has written 10 novels about Bruno Courrèges, a police chief who solves crimes in a sleepy fictional town in the Périgord region of southwestern France. In 1998, Martin and his wife bought an old farmhouse with a barn on a quiet country lane in Le Bugue. It wasn't long before they'd adapted to the rhythms and flavors of #Prigordin life. Martin describes himself as “a welcome stranger” in the community, though his adaptation seems complete. He makes vin de noix, a local liqueur made from green walnuts. He takes part in a local cassoulet competition. And he relishes recounting bits of farm wisdom. But in between planning meals and visiting vineyards, Martin, who spent almost 3 decades writing for The @Guardian, takes care of business: He retreats to his office in the pigeon tower, where he does most of his writing — at least 1,000 words a day. “It’s the classic journalist’s dream,” he tells @nytfood.
