In early June, demonstrators in #Caracas paused at a memorial near the spot on the road where an antigovernment protester, Neomar Lander, was killed by security forces. Nearly every day for more than 3 months, thousands of #Venezuelans have taken to the streets to vent fury at President @nicolasmaduro and his increasingly repressive leadership. Our photographer @meridithkohut has been covering these confrontations, which often turn into lopsided and sometimes lethal street brawls. “I feel like I’m inside a video game when photographing the front lines — constantly skipping obstacles and dodging projectiles whizzing from all directions,” she writes. The protesters, known as La Resistencia, improvise to protect themselves. Some turn swim goggles and plastic soda bottles into makeshift gas masks. Others have fashioned armor from carpet scraps to thwart rubber bullets. But Neomar was wearing a carpet vest when he died on the front lines. At his vigil, a fellow La Resistencia member squatted, and vowed to stay in the street until the government falls. “Staring into my camera,” @meridithkohut writes, “he had this message for the president: ‘Take a good look at my face, because I am not afraid.’”
