“I once started out to walk around the world,” the poet #LawrenceFerlinghetti wrote, “but ended up in Brooklyn.” More specifically, he ended up in Coney Island, where he learned to fall “in love with unreality.” The photographer @laurenwelles first visited Coney Island one afternoon 4 years ago. “I went thinking there was no way I was going to get any interesting photos because everyone has already been there and done that,” she recalled. Then she set foot on the beach, where she found people of every ethnicity and income level, all pressed together at a density rivaling that of a Midtown street, but turned outward rather than inward. “I get lonely in the streets of the city, where everybody’s isolated, on their way somewhere,” @laurenwelles said. “On the beach, nobody has anywhere to go. There’s no barriers between people, just the air and the sea.” Visit the link in our profile to see more of her #blackandwhite photos from #ConeyIsland. #?️
