Twice a year, a half billion birds traveling between Africa and Europe make a rest stop in the marshes and swamps of Israel’s Hula Valley. Here, tractors spread corn and birdseed as part of a government-funded program to feed tens of of thousands of cranes that would otherwise destroy nearby crops. This nature reserve is their safe zone, a place where they can rest and refuel during their long journey, which includes the threat of hunters in the Mediterranean.
