Wander down a side street off Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens, and you'll find 969 NYC Coffee, an informal half-grocery, half-snack shop. Half the world seems to live in the area, “and still it’s a surprise to stumble on a Japanese cafe,” Ligaya Mishan writes in @nytfood. The owner, Mitsumine Oda, grew up in Chiba, Japan, and came to New York 9 years ago. For a while, he ran a sushi franchise. But then he found this space — once a salon — closer to his home in Woodside. The only dish on the menu costing more than $5 is ramen, which at $8 is nearly half the price of a starter bowl at Ippudo in Manhattan. About the name: “It’s my favorite number,” Mitsumine said. @anrizzy photographed a table filled with food at #969NYCCoffee while on assignment for @nytfood. ? the kimchi pork heart-shaped #onigiri, bottom and top left — and visit the link in our profile to read more about it. #?
