This summer, we selected 6 #poems by contemporary American poets and asked 6 photographers to let the words inspire them. ✨ @pgannawayphoto read Jenny Johnson’s poem “Ladies’ Arm Wrestling Match at the Blue Moon Diner.” With her camera in hand, she drove along the #Shenandoah River in Virginia and West Virginia, which is mentioned in the poem. @pgannawayphoto, who’s based in San Francisco but grew up in the South, says that she interprets the poem as being about “coping with defeat and the resulting rebirth.” When she first read the words, she thought back to her own experience in the area. “But I didn’t know this particular part of the region,” she writes, “and I sometimes struggled to find the images I was after.” As she drove, she looked for symbols of the South’s defeat in the Civil War, which she said are everywhere. “I tried to look for landscapes that echoed the new growth over old,” she writes. Swipe left to see more photos by @pgannawayphoto and to read the poem by Jenny Johnson. #poetry
