In this refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, #Bangladesh, soccer is a joyful escape. The game helps the Rohingya — a Muslim ethnic group driven from Myanmar — forget about their exile in Bangladesh, even if just for a few hours. One of the players, Mohammed Ismail, is a 2nd-generation refugee, born 24 years ago in this ramshackle camp on the southern tip of Bangladesh. His parents fled violence in their native Myanmar, where the Rohingya aren’t recognized as citizens even though they’ve lived there for hundreds of years. For refugees like Mohammed, #soccer is a prized diversion. “When I play football the sadness and anger is far away,” he said, smiling. “But after I finish, it always comes back.” The soccer field lies on an elevated plain with a sweeping view of the refugee camp, called Kutupalong: mud-walled hovels and split bamboo structures laced with open sewers. @allisonsarahjoyce took this photo of #soccer players showering after a game.
