Soon after the 2017 French presidential election, @stefaniarousselle — a journalist in Paris who contributes to @nytvideo — set off on a road trip throughout France. For 2 months, she’s making her way around the country with one subject in mind: love (ou, comme on dit en français, l'amour). Last week while visiting the Hauts-de-France region, she met Gérard Bruchet, who told her his story: “I was Jeanne’s neighbor. I lived right there, the 5th house on the right,” said the 69-year-old, a former fisherman. “When her husband died, I offered to help her mow her lawn. I was married with children and she had a little girl. I would address her in the formal form, ‘vous.’ Nothing happened for 10 years. One day, I declared my love. And it happened. I left my house.” Jeanne died 2 months ago. “She was the love of my life. In the morning, we would listen to the radio and dance together in the kitchen. I go to the cemetery every day to talk to her.” So far, @stefaniarousselle writes, the stories she has heard "have been pretty intense. Love generates a lot of pain.” Follow her to see more — and to help her decide where to go next on her #AmourRoadTrip.
