For their first date, in 1949, Leon Watson and Rosina Rodriquez went to the movies. But they didn’t walk in together. First went Rosina, a fair-skinned woman who traces her roots to Mexico. Leon, who’s black, waited several minutes before going in and sitting next to her. “We always did it,” he told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ one recent afternoon. “They looked at you like you were in a zoo. We just held our heads high and kept going.” When Leon and Rosina married in Oakland in 1950, mixed-race marriage had just become legal in California, the result of a lawsuit that reached the State Supreme Court. Now they’re among the oldest living #interracial couples legally married in the U.S. — and today, they’re marking the 50th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, the U.S. #SupremeCourt case that overturned antimiscegenation laws nationwide. Half a century later, the Watsons — she’s 88 and he’s a year older — don’t have to look any further than their own family to see how much has changed. One grandson is married to a Vietnamese-American woman; another is engaged to a Filipino-American woman. On the 50th anniversary of #lovingvvirginia, visit the link in our profile to read about the Watsons, who were photographed in Oakland by our staff photographer @jimwilson125.
