The British artist Lucy Sparrow’s artistic MO consists of taking a small retail store and duplicating its every item in felt. (Yes, felt.) In London, she’s done a felted corner store, a felted sex shop and an outlet selling felt versions of high-powered guns. (That was her invention; such places don’t yet exist in Britain.) For her first New York installation, “8 ’Till Late,” — a mock convenience store that just opened in a storefront beside @thestandard, High Line, hotel in New York — Lucy (@sewyoursoul) flew in about 9 tons of fake goods. The 9,000 objects include dozens of cigarette packs — Marlboros, Pall Malls and other American brands — all sewn from colored felt; shelf after shelf of Doritos, also in felt; actual soda coolers and store shelves with felt covering every surface. “I’ve always been fascinated by things made out of materials that they’re not,” the 30-year-old artist explained last week; our staff photographer @cenicola0 took her portrait of her surrounded by some of those things.
