When Breonne Rittinger, 21, and her boyfriend, Taylor Cowan, 27, were looking for a pet last year, they considered their options. As models who travel often, the couple wanted a pet that required less oversight. They share an apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with 2 other people, and one of their roommates already had 2 cats. A dog didn’t seem feasible. So Breonne had an idea: rats. Now they have 3. “I’ve definitely turned into a crazy rat lady,” Breonne said. “But I’m totally OK with that.” Taylor says his sister was “grossed out” by the new pets, as were several of their friends. And when Breonne brought the rats to her modeling agency, 2 employees refused to meet them. These reactions aren’t surprising. Rats have long been the scourge of New York City. With recent research suggesting that the street rat population could be near 3 million, it’s easy to grasp why many New Yorkers will not embrace their domestication. But rat owners, like Breonne and Taylor, say their pets are sociable, smart and cuddly. @celestesloman photographed Nibbler, one of the couple’s 3 rats while on #nytassignment in New York. #?
