On Saturday, we asked the photographer @dave_sanders to photograph the opening of the new Goethals Bridge, which connects Staten Island and Elizabeth, New Jersey. Like thousands of other bridges across the U.S., the old bridge — which opened in 1928 — wasn’t designed to handle its current traffic. But on Saturday, the old bridge offered @dave_sanders this view. In the mid-afternoon, he joined a crowd of journalists who captured the first wave of cars crossing from New Jersey. Long after the others had left, he said, a Port Authority police officer let him take photos from the original bridge by climbing a ladder — he guesses it was about 20 feet high — and standing on a small maintenance platform. Visit the link in our profile to read more about 3 of New York’s newest gateways — cable-stayed bridges that look almost too ethereal to bear the load of thousands of vehicles and people each day. #?
