Appearing at auction for the first time in 30 years, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s ‘Untitled (One Eyed Man or Xerox Face)’ was one of a number of the artist’s paintings to take the art world by storm in the early 1980s, as he made the dramatic ascent from street artist to gallery sensation. Basquiat’s heroic male figures, always depicted with both arms raised aloft, and often shown with a studded halo or roughly pronged crown, formed the centrepiece of almost all the artist’s most important early works. These hero figures referred to the African-American stars of sporting, musical and artistic worlds who, like Basquiat himself, transcended their social status to become national icons thanks to their extraordinary talents.
