Franz Gertsch’s monumental photorealistic painting is installed in our galleries ahead of next month’s #ContemporaryArt auction in #London. Gertsch was enthralled by the androgynous appearance of friend and fellow artist, Luciano Castelli, creating a series of portraits of him in the 1970s including this work, Luciano II, from 1976. Using a painstaking method of painting that entails the use of fine brushes and tiny, contracted strokes, Gertsch’s technical mastery can be compared to that of Old Master Painters Jan van Eyck and Albrecht Dürer. Indeed, few artists practicing today can match Gertsch in terms of sheer scarcity and artistic importance. Only 20 major paintings by the artist remain in private hands, with the others held in museum collections, or retained in Gertsch’s personal collection.
