This striking image of Saint Joseph preparing the milk soup, circle of Gerard David 1460-1523, is probably a fragment of a larger #painting of the Holy Family. It will be offered in our @sothebysfr auction of the collection of celebrated Parisian dealers, the Bacri brothers on 30 March. At least seven versions of this religious subject by Gerard David are known, set in an everyday context – a composition which was popular in 17th-century Holland. Its iconography, specific to early 16th century Flanders, is characterised by detailed, expressive faces and painting so clear that it seems almost drawn. The strong #red and figure standing out clearly against background of Flemish architecture is typical of the style found in #Bruges at that time. #sothebysparis #gerarddavid #Paris
