Born and raised in Bombay, Jehangir Sabavala was a prominent figure in India’s avant-garde movement. Influenced by European Modernism, Sabavala experimented with a number of artistic techniques including Synthetic Cubism, for which ‘The Descent from the Cross’ is a perfect example. Executed in 1959, the artist deconstructs the iconic Pieta tableaux, simplifying it into geometric lines and curves – an indicator of Sabavala’s subsequent move into the world of Cubism.
