It’s been 13 years since Suleiman Abdullah Salim was tortured in a secret prison in Afghanistan a place run by the CIA that he calls “The Darkness.” And it has been 8 years since he was released — no charges, no explanations. But today, the 45-year-old is still struggling to move on. “It is always there,” he said. “The Darkness comes.” Suleiman was subjected to some of the CIA’s most brutal techniques — beatings, hanging in chains, sleep deprivation and water dousing. He can’t talk about his experiences with his wife. And he’s scared of drawing too much attention. At one point during his imprisonment, he was kept in a large cage with as many as 22 other prisoners. Pigeons flew in and out of the prison. “I remember one flew in, and was just outside our cage,” he said. “I was thinking, the pigeon was free and I was in the cage.” Outside his house in in Zanzibar, Tanzania, he built a cage for the pigeons he breeds for a local market. It is larger than most of the cells he was kept in. “I like to sit with the pigeons,” he said. “I like to get away from people.” @bdentonphoto photographed Suleiman with one of his pigeons.
