In Santa Ana, California, all 7 members of the City Council are Latino. So is the mayor pro tem, as well as 78% of the 343,000 people who live in this city 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Today, Santa Ana stands as the face of a new California, a state where Latinos have more influence in everyday life — electorally, culturally and demographically — than almost anywhere else in the country. The historic downtown is clustered around what the official city map calls “Fourth Street,” but everyone here knows as “Calle Cuatro.” Its sidewalks are lined with stands selling churritos and tostilocos. And a twirl of the dial on a car radio reveals a choice of Spanish-language stations. There are limits to the transformation, but the Latino progress in Santa Ana offers a glimpse of how much of the U.S. will probably look in coming decades. @acullenphoto photographed this mural in Logan, one of Santa Ana’s oldest Mexican neighborhoods. It features the faces of local men who served in the armed forces.
