@george_etheredge photographed pedestrians strolling past an Upper East Side restaurant where a woman yelled racist remarks at @ニューヨーク・タイムズ deputy Metro editor Michael Luo (@luomich) and his family on Sunday. “Go back to China!” she yelled from down the block as the family looked for a spot to eat lunch that rainy day. @luomich sprinted to confront the woman, who threatened to call the cops. When he walked away, she screamed, “Go back to your fucking country.” @luomich was born in the U.S. Later that day, he published an open letter. “Maybe you don’t know this, but the insults you hurled at my family get to the heart of the Asian-American experience,” he wrote on @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. “It’s this persistent sense of otherness that a lot of us struggle with every day. That no matter what we do, how successful we are, what friends we make, we don’t belong.” Visit the link in our profile to read the reactions of @ニューヨーク・タイムズ readers of all backgrounds who heard @luomich's story.
