Almost like clockwork, the boys’ fevers began in the morning: At 8 a.m. for Omar, who is 8; at 11 for Aristides, who is 7. Their family had found no medicine. The family lives in El Dique, #Venezuela, a rural town where malaria was largely unknown until 2 years ago. But recently, the boys’ grandfather died of the disease. When @ニューヨーク・タイムズ journalists visited, their grandmother hardly spoke or moved from her chair. Officially, the spread of #malaria in Venezuela has become a state secret. But the most recent internal figures confirm a surge is underway. In the first 6 months of the year, cases rose 75 percent. Venezuela’s economic breakdown has “triggered a great migration, and right behind it is the spread of malaria,” said Dr. Jorge Moreno, a researcher at state-run laboratory in the mining region. “With this breakdown comes a disease that is cooked in the same pot.” We’ll be sharing more photos from #Venezuela by @meridithkohut later today. #nytweekender
