Men worked at the Cuatro Muertos — “4 Dead Men” — mine near Las Claritas, #Venezuela. The hole sinks 15 stories deep and runs the length of a football field. Watery pits like this one, the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, are spreading malaria to miners. And yet tens of thousands people are traveling from across Venezuela to work in illegal gold mines, looking for a future. Here, waiters, office workers, taxi drivers, college graduates, even civil servants on vacation from their government jobs, are out panning for black market gold, all under the watchful eyes of an armed group that taxes them and threatens to tie them up to posts if they disobey. It is a society turned upside down. And it comes with a steep price: #Malaria, long driven to the fringes of the country, is back with a vengeance in Venezuela. This #nytweekender, we have been sharing photos by @meridithkohut.
