A lot for sale in Detroit’s Midtown. Once a symbol of American economic might, and later a symbol of American urban ruin, #Detroit is no longer a simple story. Almost no one seems entirely sure what to make of the city today. Yes, there is a building boom, bustling sports stadiums and upscale signifiers soon to come. They’re transforming the areas in and around the city’s once desolate downtown. Hipster outposts in Midtown and Corktown are drawing young people from the suburbs and afar. And since the city’s traumatic bankruptcy in 2014, almost everyone agrees that the city has made significant progress on improving services long deemed hopeless. But what that means for the rest of the city and who is benefiting have set in motion a layered conversation about development, equity, race and class. It’s playing out with particular force in Detroit, once the fourth-largest city in the U.S. Now, Detroit is a place grappling with poverty, crime and failing schools, but also still animated by the bones of its former glory. This #nytweekender, we’ll be sharing more of @hlswift’s photos from Detroit. Visit the link in our profile to read the full story.
