Until recently, parents didn’t let their kids outside here, for fear of the 6 gangs that controlled the sprawling neighborhood. Just 3 years ago, Honduras had the highest homicide rate in the world, San Pedro Sula had the highest in the country and this neighborhood had the highest in the city. Gangs used to frequent this building — 2 years ago, a girl walking home was kidnapped and then brought here and raped — and the soccer field used to be a place to bury bodies.
