One Sunday in July, Ashish Awasthi left his wife and 2 kids at home. The 27-year-old rode his motorcycle to a remote railroad track and jumped in front of a train. In his pocket, he carried a note written in a mix of Hindi and English: “I’m going to commit suicide because I can’t meet my company’s sales targets and my company is pressuring me.” Ashish was a salesman for Abbott Laboratories, an American health care company. In December 2013, when he got the job, he felt as if he’d won the lottery. And he thrived there, winning a top salesman award in 2015. Sales jobs with global powerhouses like Abbott are prized positions in India, but they can also be extremely demanding. In the push to win customers in a chaotic and highly competitive drug market, some Abbott managers told employees to pursue sales at virtually any cost — in violation of Indian law, professional medical standards and the company’s own ethics guidelines. @lokeatul photographed Anita Awasthi at home with her youngest child just days after her husband’s suicide. Abbott gave the family a check for 345,000 rupees, about $5,000. But Anita has refused to cash it. “He died because of them,” she said. “They must take responsibility.”
