In Venezuela, the clock is running backward. In 1961, the country was the first in the world to be certified by the @worldhealthorganization for eradicating malaria in its most populated areas. Since then, others have dedicated a lot of time and money to beating back the disease. But in Venezuela, economic turmoil has brought #malaria back, sweeping the disease out of the remote jungle areas where it quietly persisted. Now, it has spread at levels not seen in #Venezuela for 75 years. At least 70,000 people from all walks of life — waiters, office workers, taxi drivers, college graduates — have been streaming into illegal gold mines over the last year. As they hunt in watery pits, the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, they’re catching malaria by the tens of thousands. Carlos Freydel, photographed here by @meridithkohut, said he has had malaria 60 times during the 9 years he has worked illegally mining for gold. When he gets sick, it usually keeps him away from work for a week. But it’s worth it, he said, for the money. We’ll be sharing more photos from #Venezuela by @meridithkohut later today. #nytweekender.
