Great Smoky Mountains National Park :: ??? The eastern elk (sub species) once roamed the Appalachian Mountains.
By the late 1700s elk were extinct in North Carolina. In 2001 @greatsmokysnps reintroduced elk (Cervus canadensis) to the park. A total of 52 elk were imported from Lakes National Recreation Area in Tennessee. The herd is doing well and has found a balance with black bear population. This image, from a safe and respectful distance, is of the heard near
Cataloochee.
Special thanks to the #nps volunteers for keeping the wildlife safe and answering questions.
