Camp 4 (7650m) was the highest point our small team made it to on Makalu before ultimately deciding to not attempt a summit push due to unstable snow conditions up high. Palden Namgye and Mingma Chhring were the only two team members who climbed any higher, in an effort to find a route through steep glaciated terrain. Above 8000 meters they encountered notoriously worrisome wind slabs, which resulted in 2 separate avalanches. The second one caught Mingma, tossing him head over heels toward massive seracs and cliffs below. He managed to escape and they descended immediately to our camp, terrified but safe. Over the next day we discussed all of our possible options, including waiting for another window and the possibility of the snow settling over the next week before the jetstream descends and ends the season for good. But it just did not feel right. We were all scared, we knew Mingma had gotten extremely lucky and had only suffered a few bruises, but it was certainly a close call and none of us wanted to risk repeating. We switched gears and planned to descend, all of us using oxygen in order to carry as much as we could to clean the mountain. @adrianballinger @hilareeoneill @jimwmorrison and I did as best we could to still ski with our loads, and we stumbled into Basecamp completely exhausted, defeated, yet grateful to be down and safe. It's a bit disappointing to fail on such a big objective, but truthfully I'm feeling pretty grateful in this moment. I texted my friend @myshellparker soon after we got down and I wrote: "Honestly I'm totally fine with it. We were 8 people on a huge fucking mountain. It was such a hard undertaking. In my opinion these mountains aren't necessarily for summitting. They're for getting your ass handed to you. For humbling. Sometimes they grant you passage to the top, but it's sorta rare. We got worked. We tried hard, we made good decisions and we lived." Thanks again to everyone who followed along throughout our journey, your support and words of encouragement meant a great deal. And thanks to @thenorthface @jaybirdsport @outsidemagazine @petzl_official for the incredible support. #skimakalu2015
