The mountains always have the final say, and for those of you who know snow, this one's pretty obvious. Yesterday we awoke to decently clear skies and light snow, planning on moving from camp 3 at 24,500ft to camp 4, @adrianballinger and @jimwmorrison were hoping for an early summit the following day while @hilareeoneill and I planned on spending another night up high to acclimatize for our no oxygen attempt later in the month. But Makalu had other plans. The Sherpa team radioed as we were getting ready to tell us they were turning back due to deep snow and avalanche danger. We immediately switched gears and prepared to descend back to Basecamp, knowing that the mountain wasn't ready for us to go any higher just yet. As we descended carefully through white out conditions and deep snow we heard natural avalanches occurring everywhere, thankfully not too close but the crashing booming sounds of ice and snow hurdling down massive slopes was enough of a reminder that yet again we are not ever in control, and that most often the conservative decision is the right decision in these big mountains. We are all happily and safely down in basecamp now, the skies are sunny and calm, and it seems like the perfect summit day; except for the evidence all around us that it is not yet time. This photo is of the West Pillar of Makalu, and is about a mile away and a mile above our basecamp, which means that highly visible avalanche crown is.....sizeable. Time to rest and wait, let the mountain settle and go through its motions, and hopefully she gives us a chance for a summit push in the next week or so. #skimakalu2015 @thenorthface @outsidemagazine
