@hilareeoneill and @jimwmorrison scoping the steep face just below camp 1 on our final descent on Makalu. Notice the massive loads on their backs. We did our best to carry as much as we could down from camps 3 & 4 in order to help the Sherpa clean the mountain quickly, but skiing with 50-60lbs on your back at over 24,000ft presents a pretty solid challenge. These two managed to ski all the way from 7650m with their loads, but I didn't feel super confident on skis with the difficult snow conditions and serious terrain combined with so much weight on my back so I didn't click into my skis until camp 2. The snow became soft and fun at that point, and we all forgot about our failed summit and aching backs and just went skiing. Better than reaching the top and better than any tangible success was the feeling of simply sliding on snow with three of the best people I know for no purpose other than because it's awesome and we love it. #skimakalu2015 #?? @ザ・ノースフェイス @alpenglowexpeditions @outsidemagazine
