A migrant at the Abu Salim detention center in Tripoli, #Libya. Dozens of #migrants captured at sea were among about 300 men housed in two dimly lit, 50-by-10-yard concrete bunkers here. The pads they slept on covered every inch of the floors, bedbugs swarming around them. Last year, more than 170,000 Arab and African migrants tried to get to Europe through Libya, where human smuggling operations are growing ever more callous and brazen. At least as many are expected to make the journey through the lawless country this year. Tyler Hicks photographed some of them at Abu Salim and similar centers.
