Elibenia Polanco, 24, a fabric-store clerk from San Francisco de Macorís, Dominican Republic. Elibenia arrived in the U.S. on Oct. 25, 2014. “Life here is too fast — everything is too quick, too stressful. You have to be careful on the street; some people aren’t friendly...My country is very different — people smile. But in my country, they have a saying: Whoever doesn’t go to #NewYork dies blind.” Elibenia was photographed by @jr, who prints large-scale photos of his subjects and pastes them onto rooftops, edifices, shipping containers, streetscapes and more. For #nytweekender, we’re sharing some of @jr’s portraits of recent immigrants in #NewYork, shot for #NYTMag. On Thursday, the oversize images were pasted throughout the five boroughs. Hint: You can find Elibenia’s portrait on Richmond Terrace between Franklin Avenue and York Avenue on Staten Island. Share your photos with the hashtag #WalkingNewYork.
