#10 A Whole Lot Of Blubber
This is a female (cow) Southern elephant seal that I photographed while exploring South Georgia. If you ever have a chance to spend some time watching an elephant seal colony interact, be sure to do it...it is a very entertaining spectacle. They are insanely big, loud, and blubbery. The male bulls can be huge, and are often five to six times larger than their female counterparts. The record size bull Elephant Seal, recorded in 1913, measured over 22 feet long and was estimated to weigh an incredible 11,000 pounds! That's a heck of a lot of blubber. While they are very ungainly on the land, once in water they are quite agile and beautiful swimmers. But during breeding season, the bulls do not leave the land because they need to defend their harem from other males. Some males can stay ashore for more than three months without food, living off their blubber stores while jousting with other males. It's quite the scene when two males go at it. I loved this sweet little cow, who seemed to be much more fragile and sweet than the rest of the blubbery giants around her. Doesn't she have a cute face?
