Portrait of three Haenyeo divers, some of the few remaining female divers of South Korea, as they rest on the deck of a boat after hours of free diving forabalone, octopus, sea urchins and other mussels along the shallow banks of the ocean just outside Yeosu, South Korea. How ironic is it that friend and @NatGeo colleague,@davidalanharvey and I would be working on similar projects at the exact same time. Late last month I was in South Korea being filmed for the Arirang TV documentary, In Frame. One day the production crew said we would spend the morning with a group of Haenyeo divers, the last remaining female divers who still free dive (meaning hold their breath) to collect by hand various crustacean and mussels from the seafloor. For added insight, the tradition of Haenyeo divers goes back to the 17th century. In the 1950’s there were over 30,000 Haenyeo working the sea bottom. Today, there are only hundreds, between 50-85 years of age, a tradition waning due to the hard work and better economic opportunities elsewhere. I would only spend 2-3 hours with these amazing women before heading off on another part of the TV project, yet this short time spent on a boat off Yeosu ended up being the most memorable of the entire trip — and pleased to know David was also with Haenyeo divers not that far away in Jeju Island. Small world. #Yeosu #SouthKorea #Haenyeo #divers #portrait #female divers #iPhoneOnly #BandW #BW @NatGeo
