Paul Salopek walking through Wadi Musa in Jordan, early evening of December 26, 2013 (Boxing Day), as he nears the one year mark of @OutofEdenWalk project, an overland journey that began January 10, 2013, in Ethiopia. Often in communication with Paul Salopek, I knew he was nearing the historical landmark known as Petra. At the entranceway, Paul calls: “John, I’m can see the entrance to Petra. Already spotting tourists in the distance. Likely 30 minute away. Have to keep walking. Hope you can find me”. Running, Zeek and I slithered through the gauntlet of tourist touts and minefields of mule dung, running nonstop till reaching the iconic structure of Petra. When we reached the Treasury, I stopped, panted for a moment and thought ‘That’s nice”, continuing in the quest of finding Paul. It had been seven months since I’d last seen Paul in Saudi Arabia, yet there he stood before me exactly the same, only this time instead of a camel, Paul was with a mule, about to complete 3000+ kilometers of overland travel, an act of slow journalism that has taken us through Ethiopia, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia and now midway through Jordan. With a lunge on the rope, we traversed upward through the most surreal landscape I’d ever seen — a magenta brick road that was carved by the truly powerful wizard of nature; The wind. This photograph doesn’t appear in next months magazine and though I rarely like any photograph I take, this one does appeal to me. It is the determination in Paul’s expression. The near escalator shape of the naturally honed walkway, a majestic pathway of Willy Wonka design that was gifted to us in all its grandeur. All my best, John Stanmeyer “Promised Lands”, part III of the Out of Eden Walk in the December 2014 issue of National Geographic. @thephotosociety #landscape #WadiMusa #Petra #Jordan #Arabia #MiddleEast #rock
