Late at night and another blown tire — our second — after slamming into sharp rocks in Wadi Hafir, Jordan, while on assignment earlier this year for part III of the @OutofEdenWalk project, appearing in the December 2014 issue of National Geographic magazine. I had been spending numerous nights under moonlight, deep in this wadi (valley), photographing petroglyphs, carved into large rocks by ancient walkers who left their mark, their art and messages some 3000 years ago. A sort of superhighway for tens of thousands of years, this wadi would have been one of the many pathways that our ancestors walked through in our collective migration out of Africa that began some 50,000-60,000 years ago. On this particular evening I was driving — likely a bad idea — and clipped the left front tire against a sharped pointed rock, shredding it. Fortunately we have a spare as the nearest town was 20 or so kilometers away. Under an illuminating moon, my good friend and guide, @zeekkhdeer (the fine gentlemen standing), still needed his head torch to help our local bedouin guide see what he was doing. I’ll never forget this wonderful night, where the unexpected and often unwanted ends up becoming a magical moment. Next week arrives to newsstands and mailboxes the December 2014 issue of National Geographic magazine. You can see the photograph I made of those magnificent petroglyphs in the story, “Promised Lands”, Part III of the Out of Eden Walk project. All my best, John Stanmeyer @thephotosociety #Jordan #WadiHafir #WadiRum #MiddleEast #refugees #night #moonlight #tire #blowntire #desert
