The fabled plains of Edom, wind etched landscape in Shobak, Jordan, viewed from Montreal Castle (Crusader Castle) and also known as Krak de Montreal or Mons Regalis. While photographing for @NatGeo earlier this year on part III of the @OutofEdenWalk, I took a diversion over to Montreal Castle, a spectacular structure that has overlooked this hillside for nearly 1000 years. I wanted to understand how the landscape in this part of present day Jordan shaped both history and migration. Through these windswept hills our ancestors walked some 50,000-60,000 years ago in our first act of migration out of Africa. In 1187 Ayyubid sultan Saladin invaded the region and besieged Montreal — the act of a siege is fascinating and brutal…in these very hills, Saladin’s troops surrounded the castle for nearly two years until the occupants aledegely began to go blind due to the lack of salt. This region was also the overland routs to Mecca and Medina, a pilgrims road, a merchant pathway. Today it is a magnificent yet forbidding landscape where unfortunately only a few intrepid travelers visit on quick jaunts from Petra in nearby Wadi Musa. Initially thought I’d only spend a few minutes here, yet ended up absorbed for more than two hours, studying the typography, marveling at the architecture, imagining what it must have been like both as the invader and the one being invaded. Extreme weight, history and power in this region, not to be missed and equally respected. @ThePhotoSociety #MontrealCastle #KrakdeMontreal #Shobak #Jordan #Edom #landscape #hills
