The narrow pathway towards Petra in preparation for Petra by Night, a cultural event presented at the historic edifice known as the Treasury, caved into the ravines and mountains by the Nabatean nearly 3000 years ago in southern Jordan. While on assignment for National Geographic magazine earlier this year, part III of @OutofEdenWalk, I had to push myself to be interested in what was basically a tourist event. Sure glad I did. As I wandered through the labyrinth of towering ravines that lead towards Petra, I naturally became captivated at the shimmering candles, the sheer epic scale that night envelopes, where the sky offers no limits and the ground beneath your feet holds sway to the historicity which lies ahead. The Treasury is indeed the most photographed structure in all of Petra. While looking through the camera in the warm light, one can’t help be pulled into a trance-like state. There was one thing missing; I was alone and early — few people around to offer a sense of scale to the grandeur that is the Treasury. Without notice, a man who was preparing hundreds of candles for the event suddenly stopped to gander in bewilderment why I was there, then left continuing his illuminating task. Were it not for his few seconds of perplexity, there wouldn’t have been any poetic, solitary sense of scale. No true understanding to the enormous task we can witness today when hands deftly carved this canyon some 3000 years ago. Like many photographs that never appear in the magazine, this simple yet personal moment fell to the editing floor. No images of Petra appear in next months issue but I did want to present an outtake here for all those who love ancient history, exceptionally unique architecture and for the kids out there (and in all of us) who remember the closing scene in a movie that stared Harrison Ford. Pick up next week a copy of the Dec 2014 issue of National Geographic for my latest story, “Blessed. Cursed. Claimed”, Part III of the Out of Eden Walk project.
