A Bedouin woman prepares a fire to cook the family’s dinner in their home, a residence located in the face of a cave within the historic and culturally important Petra heritage site in southern Jordan. The family has been living for many years in the Umm al Beyar ruins, the last of the Nabatean cave dwellers who for generations have lived in what were tombs, one the waining traditions of the Bedouins who are being pushed into modern housing outside of the UNESCO heritage site. Like countless families before them, Gassemeh has no interest in living anywhere else but within this cave, carved into these mountains 3000 years ago. While on assignment for National Geographic magazine earlier this year, part III of the @OutofEdenWalk project, I took my two son’s, @richardstanmeyer and @konstantinstanmeyer, into Petra in our search to find the few remaining Bedouins still living within the ancient caves of this historical landscape in southern Jordan. With the help of @zeekkhdeer and a local guide, we climbed into the back of a pickup and drove at dust to a remote part of this UNESCO heritage site. Tucked deep within this spectacular landscape, we could see in the distance a glowing light within a massive wall of a mountain. Once closer, the brilliance and enormity of Bedouin life unfolded before us — preparing the evening meal. This photograph was in the final tray or projection while editing at National Geographic headquarters back in May of this year, but fell to the editing floor in layout — as mentioned on previous posts, a National Geographic story is about storytelling, not just a collection of your favorite photographs. Another image depicted showing Gassameh and her family having dinner appears on the iPad and online version of the magazine. Pick up next week a copy of the December 2014 issue of National Geographic magazine of my latest story, “Blessed. Cursed. Claimed”, Part III of the Out of Eden Walk project.
