From collector to conservationist: In 1886, William Temple Hornaday, chief taxidermist for the Smithsonian, brought American bison from Montana to Washington, D.C., in an effort to establish a National Zoo. What he also did was kick start a movement to bring bison back from the brink of extinction. Hornaday believed a national zoo was needed to protect endangered species like bison. On March 2, 1889, President Cleveland signed a law establishing the National Zoological Park. #TBT #WeSaveSpecies
