Asian elephants Kamala, Swarna and Maharani made their public debut in one of the outdoor habitats in Elephant Trails this morning! Swarna and Kamala calmly explored their new habitat, snacking on leaves and dusting themselves with sand. Maharani was a bit more nervous exploring the new yard, but quickly adjusted and trumpeted loudly. The growth of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo herd from four to seven Asian elephants establishes a multigenerational herd like those found in the wild. The new elephants will not physically interact with Bozie, Shanthi, and Ambika until our curator and elephant keepers feel they have settled into their new habitat.
