Celebrate the 4th of July with America’s BFFs from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. Usually, BFF means best friends forever, but here at the National Zoo, BFFs are better known as black-footed ferrets. In 1981, black-footed ferrets were thought to be extinct until a small population was found in Wyoming. The National Zoo and SCBI worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to save this species and reintroduce them to the wild.
