The latest red pandas to become parents at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute are Shama and Rusty! Keepers watched Shama give birth to a litter of three cubs on June 26 via closed-circuit cam. They’re monitoring the family closely. All four pairs of red pandas living at SCBI gave birth to cubs this year – 10 cubs in all, 7 of whom survived. That’s the most cubs ever born at SCBI in one year. And including the birth of Shama and Rusty’s cubs, more than 100 red pandas have been born at SCBI in the last 40 years. Here is a picture taken from the closed-circuit cam which is as close as we can get now to Shama’s cubs.
