Late autumn here presents a spellbinding sight, as fall’s last fiery dance plays out before the delicate hoarfrost forms on the higher altitude Masaki Pass, each icy crystal resembling the glistening white hair of a frosty beard. 🧙❄️  A variety of factors including the Ise Bay typhoon of 1959, which felled many trees, transformed the Masaki Pass from a dense spruce forest to a deadwood forest. As the canopy decreased, more sunlight allowed broadleaf bamboo to run wild, which increased the deer population. These factors and others, such as an increase in the number of park users, have contributed to the formation of the unique scenery that can be seen today. In order to reduce the impact on the fragile ecosystem and restore the natural landscape, elevated wooden paths have been installed in addition to fences that prevent damage from deer.  In early November, the fiery reds are below the Masaki Pass in late November while a frosty blanket can be seen at higher altitudes.
