I bet many of you did too? And then I realised how every single part of our lives is political. It's our wonderful NHS, being able to call an ambulance, it's safety on the streets, it's our schools and whether children should get free school meals. ❤️ It's maternity care, and the cost of childcare. It's paying people a fair living wage and ensuring that they have basic rights like breaks, holidays, sick pay, and maternity leave. 🙏 It's our reproductive rights, and the freedom to love who you want to love and be who you want to be. 🏳️‍🌈❤️🏳️‍⚧️ It's criminal justice, and equal pay. It's how we choose to deal with sexism and harassment. It's the environment and climate change. And how we treat the most vulnerable people in society and around the world. It's people risking their lives in small boats because there are no safe and legal routes. 🌎♻️ It's creating a safe and happy society for us and for future generations. These choices and policies impact young people's lives every single day. That's why The Body Shop, in partnership with the British Youth Council are launching a petition calling on the government to reduce the voting age in England and Northern Ireland to 16 and adopt the policies outlined in their Manifesto: New Era for Democracy: A Pathway to Votes at 16. Their main calls for reform are: 🤍 increasing young voters’ confidence in voting by providing better political education and unbiased information around elections. 🤍reducing the barriers for young voters participating in democracy by lowering the voting age across the UK to 16, and introducing automatic voter registration. 🤍ensuring that the democratic system is accessible to young voters by removing voter ID requirements for all elections.
