日本の国立公園さんのインスタグラム写真 - (日本の国立公園Instagram)「An old church on a deserted island ⛪️ The island of Nozakijima in Nagasaki Prefecture is small and abandoned, but it's home to an important part of Nagasaki's history—Nokubi Church, a Nagasaki Prefecture-designated Tangible Cultural Property. ✨ The church dates to 1908, when local Christians pooled their money to build the structure. Christians were on the island far before the church was built, however. For centuries, they had been practicing their faith there in secret. 🤫 Christianity arrived in Japan in the mid-1500s, but during the Edo Period (1603–1867), the religion was banned, and followers were forced to go underground until the ban was lifted in 1873. Some Christians moved to Nozakijima—now part of Saikai National Park—to avoid persecution, though even on the island, they couldn't practice openly and instead behaved outwardly as followers of Buddhism or Shinto. 🙏 💁 Explore this historic church at your leisure with a visit to the island.
