But inside this house, it felt that way...you are standing with me in the falling debris and dust of an 18th century home in Varanasi, being demolished, brick by brick, by hand. In late 2018, hundreds of homes were being destroyed to make way for a 43,636 sq meter open strip of land to reach the Ganges River in Varanasi, India. Equivalent to more than six football pitches of history dropped to ruin, over 300 homes, so tourist buses and a wide promenade can bring even more people to the river, increasing pollution to India's most sacred water. Inside this ornately detailed home was a photograph of the Swaminarayan Akshardham temple located in Delhi, the only personal item left by the former inhabitants…'Akshardham' means the divine abode of God. The family for generations who once lived here had sold their abode, often for much less than its worth, to the Vishwanath Precinct Development Project. Being here, saying goodbye to so much history, saddened me how easily beauty is often erased instead of giving love and funds to restore.
