In India, ordinary staircases are mystic portals. On the landing to the entrance of our hotel in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, lit by the Good Vibrations Cafe on the third floor, transported to more exciting places than the Taj Mahal just around the corner… a passageway in the smallest of villages, Jarara in Madhya Pradesh, lead towards the light of possibilities, into an unfinished second-floor room… while a stairway to nowhere was at a dhaba in Konch, also in UP, where we had the best paneer butter marsala on the other side of this purple-blue lit wall. You never realize how supernatural a staircase could be until wandering lost, upwards.
