He appeared without notice, walking barefoot carrying a fishing net twice his size, moving briskly along a well-worn footpath that led up from the Brahmaputra river. He briefly stopped asking me to take his picture. Fleeting as our time together was, he thanked me, I thanked him, then before I could ask his name, he was gone. Our impromptu encounter was the only time we met during my three days on Majuli Island in Assam, India. Another person whose name I will unfortunately never know.
